Great Plains Food Bank closely monitors food and product recalls to help ensure the safety of the food distributed across our network. Current recall information is shared with agency partners through an email alert and posted updates in the the PARC, and partners are strongly encouraged to review this list on a weekly basis. Please note that some recalled items may not have been distributed by Great Plains Food Bank but could still reach your program through other sources.
In the event a recalled item WAS disbursed through Great Plains Food Bank (GPFB), the following actions will take place:
- GPFB staff will contact each agency partner who has/may have received the recalled items within 24 hours of the recall notice.
- GPFB will verbally confirm that the product was received and will advise on disposal methods
- GPFB may also advertise the recall through other means, such as mail, email, newspapers or radio if necessary.
All agency partners should establish a recall procedure, including plans for notifying neighbors and disposal of product. It is the responsibility of the agency partner to notify clients/neighbors who may have received a recalled item. This can be done via social media, calls, emails, flyers at the program site, etc.

Product Description: Frozen Chicken Nuggets
Reason for Announcement: Unsafe Levels of Lead
Notification Date: 4/2/2026
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert
for certain Great Value fully cooked, dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets produced on Feb. 10, 2026, due to potentially unsafe levels of lead. Although the product is no longer sold and not being recalled, it was distributed to Walmart stores nationwide, and some may still be in consumers’ freezers. The affected product is a 29-oz bag with a “Best If Used By” date of Feb. 10, 2027, lot code 0416DPO1215, and establishment number P44164. The issue was found during routine testing. Lead exposure, especially for children and pregnant women, can cause serious health risks, and the levels found may exceed recommended limits. Consumers are advised not to eat the nuggets and should throw them away or return them to the store.

Notification Date: 3/25/2026
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for certain Blackwing Organic Meats beef and pork products made between April 2024 and March 2026 because they were produced without proper federal inspection and may have false USDA inspection labels. These products could pose health risks due to potential contamination or undeclared allergens. They were distributed nationwide, though no illnesses have been reported. Consumers are advised not to eat these products and should throw them away or return them to where they were purchased.

Notification Date: 3/13/2026
La Boulangerie has issued a public health alert for frozen ready-to-eat turkey pesto and cheese stuffed pastries due to misbranding, as some packages may contain ham and cheese instead. The affected product was distributed to Costco locations across the Midwest with specific lot and best-by details. A recall was not initiated because the product is no longer available for sale. While no adverse reactions have been reported, consumers are advised to check their packaging and return the product if affected.

Product Description: Frozen Chicken Products
Reason for Announcement: Contaminated with foreign materials, specifically glass
Notification Date: 3/3/2026
Ajinomoto Foods North America has significantly expanded its February 2026 recall to include nearly 37 million pounds of frozen ready-to-eat and not-ready-to-eat chicken and pork products due to potential contamination with glass. The affected items—sold under brands including Ajinomoto, Kroger, Ling Ling, Tai Pei, and Trader Joe’s—were distributed nationwide (with some exports to Canada and Mexico) and have best-by dates ranging from February 2026 to August 2027. The issue was linked to a vegetable ingredient, likely carrots, after consumer complaints. No injuries have been confirmed, but consumers are urged not to eat the products and to discard or return them.

Reason for Announcement: Elevated levels of patulin
Notification Date: 2/13/2026
Initiative Foods is recalling one lot of its “Tippy Toes” Apple Pear Banana Fruit Puree due to elevated levels of patulin, a mold-related toxin that can pose health risks with long-term exposure. While no illnesses have been reported, potential effects include nausea, fever, headaches, and possible immune or nerve impacts. The product was distributed nationwide in retail stores across the U.S., excluding Alaska, and may also have reached Guam and Puerto Rico.

Notification Date: 2/4/2026
A limited recall has been issued for select CHIPS AHOY! Baked Bites Brookie products due to an incorrect mixing process that created small corn starch clumps, which may pose a choking hazard—especially for young children and older adults. The recall applies only to specific products with certain “Best When Used By” dates sold at select retailers nationwide, and no other CHIPS AHOY! or Mondelēz products are affected.

Reason for Announcement: Potential presence of soft plastic and/or paper pieces
Notification Date: 1/28/2026
Gerber Products Company is voluntarily recalling limited batches of Gerber® Arrowroot Biscuits (5.5 oz) due to the potential presence of soft plastic or paper pieces linked to a supplier issue. The affected products were produced between July and September 2025 and distributed nationwide. No other Gerber products are impacted. Consumers should check batch codes on the packaging to identify affected items.

Reason for Announcement: Potential Foodborne Illness – Salmonella
Notification Date: 1/15/2026
Spring & Mulberry has expanded its voluntary recall to include multiple product flavors due to potential Salmonella contamination. The affected items were sold nationwide online and through select retailers starting September 15, 2025. Salmonella can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable populations, with symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Consumers should check product details such as flavor, lot code, and packaging, and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

Reason for Announcement: Potential Foodborne Illness – Clostridium botulinum
Notification Date: 11/11/2025
ByHeart has expanded its voluntary nationwide recall to include all batches of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula cans and Anywhere Pack™ products, in coordination with the FDA. Although no unopened products have tested positive for Clostridium botulinum, the company is taking precautionary action amid an ongoing investigation into a broader spike in infant botulism cases. ByHeart is removing all products from the market, conducting third-party testing, and cooperating fully with regulators while sharing results publicly. Consumers are advised to stop using the formula immediately and seek medical attention if infants show symptoms of botulism.
