"If it wasn't for the food pantry, we would be starving, me and my wife." -Erik
For Erik and his wife, the food pantry was more than just a place to pick up groceries—it was a vital source of hope during some of their hardest times.
Both retired, Erik spent his time working as a cook and his wife a social worker. However, they found themselves facing new challenges in retirement. “We were getting food stamps, but then the income rate dropped, and we weren’t eligible anymore,” Erik explained. Like many seniors on a fixed income, they were suddenly left to stretch their limited resources even further.
Erik is diabetic and also lives with emphysema. With the high cost of medication, he often finds himself having to choose between managing his health and paying for food. That’s where the pantry stepped in.
Although it’s been a few months since Erik last visited, he remembers the impact clearly. “If it wasn’t for the food pantry, we would be starving, me and my wife.” He shared that some of the most valuable items they received were peanut butter and other basic pantry staples. These simple foods helped them get through tough weeks.
Erik’s story is a reminder of how essential these resources are for our neighbors in need and how a bag of groceries can carry more than just food. It can carry dignity, stability, and a sense of hope.
