184 employee volunteers rolled up their sleeves as they packed to end hunger during this year’s Packathon, a high-energy, team-based event hosted by the Great Plains Food Bank. Held over 4 days in April, Packathon brought together 23 corporate teams in Fargo and Bismarck to pack as much food as possible in fast-paced, 90-minute shifts with the aim to provide groceries for neighbors facing food insecurity
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of these partners, a total of 16,831 pounds of food were packed, which is enough to provide 14,025 meals for individuals and families in need across North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota.
“Packathon is a powerful example of what’s possible when businesses come together to support their communities,” said Rebecca Knutson, Corporate Relations Officer at the Great Plains Food Bank. “These teams aren’t just packing food, they’re helping ensure children, families, and seniors across North Dakota and Clay County have the meals they need to get through each day. We’re incredibly grateful for the energy, generosity, and partnership that make this event such a meaningful success each year.”
A variety of bulk food items were packed during this event including black beans, white rice, and brown rice. Volunteers took these large quantities and packed them into 1-pound bags that can be easily shared with individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Local farm Boilingberg Seed Co. donated the black beans, helping make this event possible.
This event was also made possible by the support of the event’s premier partners Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and Cargill as well as the contributing partners Bell Insurance and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
“Our West Fargo team proudly recognizes the vital role the Great Plains Food Bank plays in supporting our community and the broader region, and we are strong supporters of its mission.” shared Mike Gregoryk, Cargill’s Senior Director of Facility Leadership. “Cargill is a family company committed to providing food, ingredients, agricultural solutions, and industrial products to nourish the world in a safe, responsible, and sustainable way.”
Packathon is more than just a volunteer activity, it’s an energizing, hands-on way for companies and coworkers to make a meaningful impact together. Every box packed during the event provides food for local children, seniors and families ultimately helping fulfill the Great Plains Food Bank’s mission to end hunger together.
