Alexis is a familiar face at the Hope Center in Devils Lake, a food pantry supplied by the Great Plains Food Bank. It’s a place where she not only lends a hand but also finds support herself.
“I started volunteering here in March,” Alexis says. “I love this place — bagging groceries, boxing them, and just socializing. It’s a really positive place.”
Alexis has a part-time job dishwashing at a local nursing home. Trying to meet her needs with only part-time wages is what led Alexis to seek support at the Hope Center. She is hoping to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), which would mean higher wages and full-time work.
Her career goals were inspired by a friend who also works as a CNA and became a mentor. Alexis is determined to follow the same path. “She was a great influence on me,” Alexis explains.
To get there, she is taking practical steps. She has applied for a housekeeping position at another nursing home as a way to get her foot in the door. “I’ve heard they might help pay for CNA classes,” she says.

The Great Plains Food Bank is glad to give our neighbors a hand up while they work to better their lives. Thank you for supporting us in this mission!
