The Great Plains Food Bank proudly celebrated the 13th Annual Gowri’s Food and Funds Drive, hosted by Gowri Pillai and her family. This year’s drive resulted in the donation of 869 pounds of food and $3,535.80 in monetary contributions, helping provide vital nourishment to individuals and families facing food insecurity across the region.
What began as a simple act of compassion when Gowri was just four years old has grown into an annual tradition of generosity and advocacy. Instead of receiving birthday gifts, Gowri continues to dedicate her birthday each year to raising food and funds for the Great Plains Food Bank — inspiring community members of all ages to join our mission of ending hunger.
Hunger remains a serious challenge in the region, where 1 in 5 people, including 1 in 4 children, experience food insecurity. Every dollar donated to the Great Plains Food Bank helps provide two meals, making community-driven initiatives like Gowri’s an essential part of the hunger-relief network.
“Gowri’s leadership and compassion are truly inspiring,” said Ashleigh Brown, Corporate Engagement Coordinator at the Great Plains Food Bank. “Her continued commitment shows how powerful one young person’s passion can be. Community-led efforts like this play a critical role in ensuring our neighbors have access to nutritious food when they need it most.”
The Great Plains Food Bank extends its sincere gratitude to Gowri, her family, and everyone who supported this year’s drive including generous partners from Bobcat and Dacotah Bank. Their dedication is a powerful reminder that meaningful change can begin at any age, and that together, we can continue working toward a hunger-free future.
