The Mighty Oaks Homeschool Group has been making a difference in our communities for 15 years by volunteering at the Great Plains Food Bank. What started as a mother and her two young daughters has now blossomed into a group of five dedicated families bringing compassion and hard work to each shift.
Why do they choose the Great Plains Food Bank? For Nikki, the group’s leader, the answer is simple. “This is something that is a staple in our community. And at the very end, it’s always explained to us how many meals we packed or how many backpacks we packed or how many pounds of food. And I think that impact is huge to see,” Nikki shares. “I think the BackPack Program is our group’s favorite.”
Nikki knows just how important it is for the kids to join in the volunteering efforts. Beyond just helping their community, it helps build character and compassion. “I think volunteering is the No. 1 thing you can do as a parent to help your kids grow to be adults. And that’s my job. I remember one of the very first times when they were little, they were hungry, and I brought snacks. But even my 5-year-old at the time said, ‘Aren’t we lucky to have our food?’ And so it was instant impact.”
