In North Dakota, the rising cost of food is putting a strain on many households trying to make ends meet. One of those neighbors is Brenda, a 63-year-old woman living on a fixed income with her husband.
“Money is tight,” Brenda says. “I have to watch how I spend it.” With their monthly disability and Social Security checks, Brenda and her husband cover their mortgage, utilities, and transportation costs. While they qualify for some government food assistance, it does not go very far when prices for essentials like meat, produce, and dairy have increased significantly.
To make the most of their limited budget, Brenda has had to rely more on processed, shelf-stable foods. The recent loss of her sense of taste and smell after a bout of COVID has also diminished her enthusiasm for cooking. But Brenda remains grateful for the support she receives from the Great Plains Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry, which delivers fresh fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious items to her community quarterly.
We have some food at home, but these services are so helpful. I eat better. There are a lot of people like us who are in need. I’m thankful for any additional help I can get,” Brenda says.
Your gifts allow the Great Plains Food Bank to ensure that thousands of families facing hunger in North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota, have access to the food they need. With your support, the Great Plains Food Bank can continue providing this vital assistance to our neighbors. Thank you!
