The Great Plains Food Bank proudly celebrated alongside the Pillai family for the 12th anniversary of Gowri’s Annual Food and Funds Drive. Together, Gowri and her family raised an inspiring $4,554 – exceeding their initial goal of $3,500 – and collected 1,390 pounds of food. These remarkable contributions are enough to provide over 10,200 meals for individuals and families facing hunger.
Gowri’s journey as a hunger advocate began when she was just four years old after witnessing a person facing homelessness and deciding to take action. Since then, she has devoted her birthdays to raising food and funds for the Great Plains Food Bank, instead of asking for gifts. Her dedication over the years has been nothing short of inspiring.
“Food insecurity and hunger are often silent and invisible,” stated Gowri Pillai, the almost 16 year-old aiming to make change. “Individuals and families facing food insecurity also face shame, loss of dignity, and negative impacts on health and learning. Providing hunger-relief through food can change that. Through my project, I can help the Great Plains Food Bank provide food security, peace of mind, health and learning, and a sense of dignity for individuals facing tough challenges in our community. I hope families can focus on learning and well-being rather than be worried and struggle – that’s the reason I continue to host this every year.”
Hunger remains a persistent issue in our region, where 1 in 6 people, including 1 in 4 children, face food insecurity. For every dollar raised, the Great Plains Food Bank is able to provide two meals for those in need, making community-led initiatives like Gowri’s crucial to supporting families in our communities.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Gowri and her family for their unwavering commitment,” shared Rebecca Knutson, Corporate Engagement Manager for the Great Plains Food Bank. “Their generosity is a testament to the difference that young people can make in their communities.”
