Since retiring in 2011, our Bismarck neighbors Arthur and Shirley Carlson fill their time with hobbies like woodworking, taking care of their dog and staying active in the community.
Arthur serves as a volunteer at Heaven’s Helpers Soup Kitchen, a partner meal site of the Great Plains Food Bank. One day during his volunteer shift, he witnessed a food delivery from our truck and says he felt moved by the amount of food distributed.
Ending hunger is a mission the couple is glad to share with the Great Plains Food Bank, through volunteering today and leaving a legacy for the future.
“We feel that [the Great Plains Food Bank] is one of the best charities around,” Arthur says. Shirley adds, “They make good use of the resources, and they help the community.”
The couple decided to include a gift to the Great Plains Food Bank in their retirement plans to make the most of the tax benefits while also making a sustained difference for our neighbors facing hunger.
Through a qualified charitable distribution, Arthur and Shirley make recurring donations from their 401k. “It’s a really wonderful thing,” he says.
“You need to decide what’s important to you,” Shirley says, speaking of the significance of planning your legacy. “And this is important to us.”
Arthur and Shirley, thank you for helping to create lasting change!
